Nearly 3/4 of teenagers have hearing loss after listening to a concert

After research and testing, 72% of teenagers experience hearing loss after listening to a concert.

After the concert, 53.6% of teenagers believed that their hearing was affected. 25% of teenagers said they developed tinnitus symptoms after the concert.

During the research process, 29 teenagers received free tickets to a rock concert.Their seats are located at the farthest position of the concert site from the stage, and they are also about 15-18 rows away from the last row of seats. In order to maintain the same level of sound exposure to the 29 teenagers, their seats were also arranged in two adjacent areas.

Researchers explained to these teenagers the importance of hearing protection and recommended that they use foam earplugs. However, only 29 out of 3 people used earplugs.

研究人员使用声级校准器对音乐会上的26首歌曲进行了1645次测量。测量的声压结果在82-110分贝之间,平均声压水平为98.5分贝。其中,有10首歌曲的平均升压水平超过了100分贝。

According to the standards set by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the sound pressure level of this concert has exceeded the normal range of sound pressure levels in the workplace. One-third of teenagers have a temporary threshold shift after the concert, and this level of noise is unacceptable in the workplace.

After the concert, most adolescents’ otoacoustic emission (OAE) results dropped significantly. This test shows that the function of the outer hair cells of the cochlea is vital to people’s hearing. When exposed to strong noise, the function of the outer hair cells of the cochlea will temporarily weaken and then recover. However, repeated exposure to strong noise can cause permanent damage to the outer hair cells of the cochlea.

Jennifer Derebery is a physician and also a house
The editor-in-chief of Clinic, she said: “Young people should understand that whether they are listening to a walkman or attending a concert, as long as they are exposed to strong noises, they will causeHearing loss.If the noise level exceeds 85 decibels, the hair cell function of the inner ear will be impaired, which may cause permanent hearing loss. ”

M. Jennifer Derebery also stated, “Even when the staff actively provided ear protectors and recommended them to be used, only 29 out of 3 teenagers chose to use ear protectors. It is conceivable that most young people would ignore ear protectors. Therefore, we are responsible for reducing the sound pressure level to a safe range.”

Researchers suggest that young people should actively protect their hearing and make effective use of apps for sound level measurement in smartphones. This type of program can roughly calculate the surrounding noise level, and people can choose the necessary ear protection measures based on the results, for example, using earplugs at a concert.

In addition, Derebery and his co-authors hope that concert organizers and musicians will take concrete actions to reduce the sound level and encourage young people to take ear protection measures.

After listening to a pop or rock concert, people may have hearing problems. This is only a temporary phenomenon, called a temporary threshold shift. The symptoms usually disappear automatically within 16-48 hours, and people’s hearing will return to the previous level. However, excessively stimulating music or noise may also cause permanent hearing loss.

This research was initiated by the HRI (House Research Institute), the National Adolescent Hearing Loss Preventive Measures Project Group, and was published in the journal Otology & Neurotology.
