3 Ways Your Ears Adapt To Hearing Aids

Hearing loss is like a bad habit.   It’s easy to ignore because you’re used to silence, speaking louder, and repeating yourself. Tony Robbins and other life coaches have said that it takes 28 days to break a bad habit. That’s why when you first get hearing aids, it’s important to let them run their course for a while before you decided to stop wearing them.

1. From Silence To Noise

Experiencing sound again can be overwhelming.  You’re going to hear a lot of noises you’ve forgotten about.  Some of them you will love, while others you will hate.

Have no fear.  Your ears will become more familiar with the sound and start to drown out the excessive noises of life.  You won’t even notice the little nuances.  Time will allow your mind and ears to get used to hearing again.

You may be thinking to yourself, “The silence was more comfortable.” Admittedly it is — but there’s nothing comforting about being left out of conversations.

Remember why you got hearing aids: because you want to hear your friends and family.   And you don’t want to shout at them when you respond.  Which brings us to point #2.

2. “Why did I speak so loudly?”

Because you’ve suffered from hearing loss, undoubtedly you’ve been speaking louder than necessary.    Now that you can hear yourself again, you’ll slowly begin to lower your volume.

3. Controlling Your Hearing

You can adjust your own hearing aids.   You’ll love this feature but it can be frustrating when you’re just starting out it.   Like anything, you have to spend the time with the device in different surroundings to get a feel for adjusting.

Of course, any good clinic will give you free adjustments.   Work with your audiologist or dispenser to find out what works for you.

If adjusting proves to be difficult for you in the past, you should definitely look into LiNX hearing aids —  they can be controlled directly from an iPhone/iPad/iTouch.  All you have to do is use the app on your cell instead of reaching for your ear to turn down the volume.  It’s an easier & more discrete way to adjust them.
